The three different types of TBI symptoms

On Behalf of | Apr 27, 2021 | Injuries

Whether it is a serious motor vehicle collision, a fall or an individual who is struck in the head, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to serious medical consequences. Based on numerous factors such as the speed of vehicles involved, the height of the fall or the type of head impact, the victim could be left with structural or functional damage to the brain. Unfortunately, victims often suffer dramatic, life-altering consequences.

In many instances, a TBI can be difficult to diagnose if there is a lack of physical damage. For this reason, individuals who struggle with functional damage might not fully understand the severity of their injuries. The symptoms might be more recognizable to friends and family members rather than the victim himself of herself.

While there are nearly countless symptoms that can result from head trauma, they typically fall into three categories:

  • Cognitive: These symptoms can dull the victim’s mental abilities to various degrees. The symptoms can include memory problems including amnesia and a general sense of disorientation. Additionally, individuals could have difficulty focusing, concentrating or keeping their attention centered on a task or conversation.
  • Emotional: These symptoms generally reflect changes to an individual’s mood or personality. The victim might exhibit new personality traits such as anxiety, depression or irritability. It is not uncommon for an individual suffering from a TBI to have suicidal thoughts.
  • Physical: These symptoms reflect a more physical component and might be more easily diagnosed by a medical professional. Victims could struggle with headaches, dizziness, fatigue or tinnitus. Additionally, these individuals might experience sleep disturbances, visual changes and sensitivity to light and/or sound. In some cases, a TBI could trigger seizures.

Victims might struggle with job loss, the loss of personal relationships and a dramatic lifestyle change. They could face relentless mood swings and devastating personality changes. A once cheerful, optimistic individual can exhibit the characteristics of a sullen loner after suffering a TBI. It is wise to discuss your injury with a skilled medical professional to gain a clear understanding of the symptoms you might suffer. Additionally, discuss your accident with an experienced legal professional who can answer your questions regarding your options for monetary compensation.
